Best known as the home of the University of Maryland, College Park and students dominate life in the town. Many of the residents are students, faculty and staff of the university.
Population in July 2008 was 26,925, an increase of +9.2% since 2000. College Park is conveniently located inside the Beltway along US Route 1 (Baltimore Avenue) and served by two stations on the Metro Green Line.
College Park downtown doesn't have the ambiance and charm like some college towns, but the University of Maryland with partner with a developer to beautify a 38 acre parcel on the east edge of the campus, bordered by US Route 1 and Paint Branch Parkway. This will create new office, retail, hotel/conference, residential, and structured parking facilities, and provide inviting open spaces and connectivity to the main campus and the City of College Park.
College Park has some big-box stores that attract shoppers from miles away, such as contemporary furniture standby Ikea, Home Depot and REI Co-op, an outdoor supply store.
